Nebraska would be making a critical mistake if they got caught up in the “let’s replace the offensive coach with a defensive coach.” Athletic Director Trev Albert has to find a coach with a clear vision of what Nebraska football can become and a sound process to get them there. That said, picking from the Saban coaching tree is never wrong.

Picking from that tree worked for Georgia (Kirby Smart) and Florida State (Jimbo Fisher). It’s working so far for Mississippi (Lane Kiffin), Marshall (Charles Huff), and Texas (Steve Sarkisian) gave Alabama all it can handle on Saturday. Alabama has a host of assistants and analysts on its staff.

Defensive coordinator Pete Golding has been on Saban’s coaching staff since 2018 and has long been considered a rising star in coaching. Not only is coaching under Saban, the ultimate college football resume builder, and Golding and the Crimson Tide have also put defensive players in the NFL.

The last time Nebraska was a conference contender, the Huskers had defensive stars like Ndamukong Suh and Prince Amukamara. There is an argument that Golding doesn’t have enough experience, but he has a long list of players he’s recruited and put in the NFL.
