Marshall at No. 8 Notre Dame football (-20)

After watching App State nearly beat North Carolina in Week 1 of the college football season, it didn’t seem totally unlikely that the Mountaineers would give Texas A&M football a game.

But it was rather shocking to see Notre Dame football move to 0-3 under head coach Marcus Freeman with a loss in the home opener to Marshall as a 20-point favorite.

After what looked like a solid performance against Ohio State (maybe not as good as we thought), the defense looked as good as expected and while the offense was a work in progress, there wasn’t that much doubt that it would get going.

Think again.

Tyler Buchner, even before he got hurt, isn’t what Notre Dame football thought he was going to be. In nearly two full games, he had zero touchdown passes and two costly interceptions. He did score a rushing touchdown but he also threw the pick-six that essentially sealed the loss.

Buchner is out for the season and the one solace for Notre Dame football fans is that if take out the pick-six and the defense has really allowed an average of just 20 points through two games. If Freeman can figure out how to get the offense to protect the ball, the Irish should win some games.

But a New Years Six bowl feels like a long shot now and this team was maybe the most overrated in college football coming into the 2022 season. The Irish or Texas A&M or maybe Nebraska (remember the bravado two weeks ago?) but that’s another column for another day.
