SEC Football Power Rankings: Kentucky, Tennessee on the rise after big wins in Week 2
By Kathryn Rose
Beating Southern 65-17 isn’t exactly anything to write home about, but it’s still the first win of the season on the board. LSU rotated both Jayden Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier in at quarterback, with both obviously finding success.
The beating they gave the Jaguars shows their anger over losing due to a blocked extra point against Florida State. Next week, against Mississippi State, they’ll have the opportunity to prove themselves.
Whatever Anthony Richardson showed us in Florida’s win over Utah, he showed the opposite in the loss to Kentucky.
The Florida offense went absolutely nowhere in this game, gaining only 279 yards, and Richardson showed all his flaws. He threw the ball hard, but couldn’t seem to throw any other way. His running ability was neutralized by a Kentucky defense that only allowed him to gain four yards on the ground.
Thankfully, the defense played well. Gervon Dexter and Trey Dean were disruptive for the Gator side when they didn’t have the ball.
Against Pitt, the Vols looked like something you’d find in the toilet at first. They couldn’t stop the Pitt passing attack, and the game looked like it was gonna be 17-0 when Trevon Flowers got a pick off a deflection in the endzone.
The Vols then took control of the game, putting up a 24-17 lead before Pitt came back to force the game to overtime, where Tennessee finally pulled the game out.
Of concern for Tennessee in this game is the lack of movement on the offensive line; the Vols only averaged 2.6 yards per carry against a stout, but movable Pitt defense.
