SEC Football Power Rankings: Kentucky, Tennessee on the rise after big wins in Week 2
By Kathryn Rose
What an incredible win for the Kentucky Wildcats. Thanks to a great defensive second half that had a pick-six as a cherry on top, the Wildcats were able to beat the Gators 26-16.
Although Will Levis was quiet during this game – he only threw for 202 yards on the night – he made some key passes to keep Kentucky in the game.
The story of the night was the defense, though. Although Florida outgained Kentucky 279-272, the defense made sure that the game was pinned down enough to keep Anthony Richardson from running or throwing the ball very effectively.
Is Texas back? Well, if the game against Alabama is indicative, then yes, yes they are.
Alabama was able to get home against Texas in terms of their pass rush, but Texas was able to do the same. In addition, the run game for the Crimson Tide didn’t work very well, except for the Jase McClellan 80-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
Still, though, the Crimson Tide were able to effectively move the ball at the end of the game, and a last-second field goal denied Texas a stunning upset.
To regain the top spot in the SEC, they’ll need to reassert their dominance. But, with games against UL-Monroe and Vanderbilt coming up, their next chance to really show their mettle is against Arkansas on October 1.
Georgia had a workman-like 33-0 win against Samford on Saturday. Their win was less than impressive but was still enough to earn them the No. 1 ranking in the AP poll on Sunday.
Clearly, their blowout win against Oregon was still on the voters’ minds. However, based on that, it’s hard to conclude that Georgia isn’t the best team, especially with Alabama struggling against a Texas team that is still a question mark in terms of how good they are.
Against South Carolina, we’ll see if the Dawgs are up to the task. They’re already favored by 24.5 points, and this Gamecock team should pose no problems. Of course, that is if Georgia is really up to the task of being the nation’s top team.
