Rutgers did exactly what they were supposed to do to an overmatched FCS team. Dominate from start to finish. The Scarlet Knights rolled Wagner 66-7.

Rutgers scored 28 points in the first quarter and never looked back. They accumulated 575 yards, four running backs had at least 50 yards on the ground, and quarterback Evan Simon was efficient and threw two scores.

The Scarlet Knights also held Wagner to 19 rushing yards. The team travels to Temple next Saturday to finish non-conference play.

For the first time since 2014, Iowa lost to their in-state rival Iowa State. It was a low scoring 10-7 affair naturally because Iowa was involved. At least this week the Hawkeyes did score a touchdown.

Last season the Hawkeyes’ rushing attack was not a world-beater, but it was better than what we have seen out of it this season through two games. They are averaging less than 60 yards on the ground.

This offense is really bad and something has to change. Kirk and Brian Ferentz better figure it out fast and perhaps backup quarterback Alex Padilla gets a shot. Iowa hosts Nevada next Saturday.

Illinois bounced back after a tough defeat in Bloomington to beat Virginia handily, 24-3. The win avenges their blowout loss to the Cavaliers a year ago in Charlottesville.

The Illini defense smothered the Virginia running backs, holding them to 42 yards on the ground. Virginia also put up a goose egg on third-down conversions after attempting 16 and they also turned over the ball three times.

Illinois needs to clean up their own turnovers as they had four total on the day. They will get a chance to work on holding onto the ball against Chattanooga next week.
