WVU Football: 3 takeaways from WVU turning the lights out in Blacksburg

2. The defense got it right
Between the inexperienced secondary, questionable play-calling, and missed tackles, the first three games have been frustrating for the defense. When it was all said and done, the defense did its part, only allowing the Hokies to tally only 228 total yards.
The strength of the Mountaineer defense has been the front three. Sean Martin, Jordan Jefferson, and Dante Stills anchored the game, stifling the Hokie rushing attack, holding them to a paltry 35 yards on the ground.
With the exception of a couple of drives, the play-calling was superb. It’s obvious that the three-deep zone that is employed created those pockets where Grant Wells feasted on WVU. The secondary, although young, has some very talented and athletic players that can handle the coverage from here on out; as they say, prevent defense, prevents winning.
