ACC football power rankings: Clemson hangs on to top spot again
By Dante Pryor
14. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (1-3, 0-1)
This just in, the Yellow Jackets have fired head coach Geoff Collins. Not only is Collins out at ‘Tech, but AD Todd Stansbury is also out in Atlanta. While Collins and his staff deserve their fair share of accountability for the program’s state, the university needs more allowances for football if they want to compete in the ACC.
Associate head coach Brent Key will take over as head coach when the Yellow Jackets travel to Pittsburgh to play the Panthers Saturday night.
13. Boston College Eagles (1-3, 0-2)
This season is a bad beat for both head coach Jeff Haffley and quarterback Phil Jurkovec. The Eagles had to retool their offensive line and had injuries to deal with. Christian Mahogany was lost this summer, and Ozzy Traplio and Kevin Cline have missed time with injuries.
The poor offensive line showed itself against Florida State. Phil Jurkovec was under pressure most of the game, and the Eagles could not run the football. Boston College hosts Louisville at Alumni Stadium Saturday afternoon.
12. Virginia Tech Hokies (2-2, 1-0)
The Hokies looked overmatched against West Virginia in the Black Diamond Trophy game Friday night. Quarterback Grant Wells was awful, completing less than 50 percent of his passes for 193 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The running game, usually a staple of the Hokies’ offense, ran for a meager 35 yards.
Virginia Tech’s schedule does not get any easier with games against North Carolina, Pitt, and No. 10 North Carolina State in the next month.
11. Virginia Cavaliers (2-2, 0-1)
The Cavaliers did everything right defensively to win their road game against Syracuse. However, the offense let them down. Something is going on when Garrett Shrader outperforms Brennan Armstrong. The Ol Ball Coach might be right; someone must have kidnapped Armstrong. The redshirt senior has struggled in head coach Tony Elliot’s new offense.
The offense may get right with upcoming games against Duke, Georgia Tech, and Louisville.
