College Football Week 5 winners, losers: Oklahoma, Houston in free fall
Loser: Georgia Southern Eagles
The Georgia Southern Eagles led undefeated Coastal Carolina 24-14 with 12:09 left in the game but allowed Grayson McCall and the Chants to rattle off 20-fourth quarter points, including a game-winning touchdown with 38 seconds left.
The Eagles had their chance to knock off one of the best teams from the Group of Five in Coastal Carolina but fell short. Many thought the Clay Helton-led team was destined for bigger things after upsetting Nebraska and getting Scott Frost fired, but it seems that’s not the case.
Loser: Missouri Tigers
You have to feel sick for the Missouri Tigers this week. They were up and up big on No. 1 ranked Georgia for all but the final four minutes of the ball game. The Tigers even had a 13-point lead in the third quarter but squandered it away after Georgia went on a 20-6 run in the second half.
Missouri had a chance to make history this week and fell flat on its face. Give Head Coach Eli Drinkwitz some credit. This was a huge game for his Tigers and everyone thought they were going to get run off their home field. Instead, they came within minutes of pulling off an upset of the best team in college football.
Loser: Kentucky Wildcats
Kentucky lost a hard-fought game against Ole Miss this week. Even though it’s only their first loss of the season, the Wildcats are probably out of contention for a trip to the SEC Championship.
With Georgia continuing to win and Tennessee continuing to look strong, there aren’t many paths left for them to potentially compete for a conference championship at the end of the season. It’s still possible, but Kentucky will have to defeat both Tennessee and Georgia. And even that may not be enough.
The loss this week to Ole Miss was bad on multiple levels for Wildcat fans.
