3. Minnesota missed Mohammed Ibrahim today.

The running game is the catalyst for Minnesota’s offense. Today, the Golden Gophers were without leading rusher Mohammed Ibrahim. Minnesota ran for just 2.7 yards per rush attempt and did not have a run over ten yards. The inability to run the football cost Minnesota dearly.

Purdue football played coverage most of the game because they did not respect Minnesota’s ability to run the football. As a result, Minnesota could not sustain drives. Golden Gopher’s quarterback Tanner Morgan completed just over 50 percent of his passes and did not throw a touchdown pass but three interceptions.

Purdue’s offense wasn’t pretty, either. Quarterback Aiden O’Connell threw for just 199 yards on 40 pass attempts. Credit Minnesota’s tough defense for not allowing Purdue’s wide receivers to create after the catch. The Gophers’ defensive backs did a great job of getting the Boilermakers’ wide receivers down to the ground and not letting them run after the catch.

Tanner Morgan also missed his best receiver, Chris Autman-Bell, who is out for the season. Morgan is the type of quarterback who needs talent around him to be successful. He is not going to elevate the players around him.
