Big Ten football power rankings Week 6: The West division is wide open
By Shane Lunnen
Wisconsin followed up a blowout loss to Ohio State with another blowout home loss to Illinois. And then Paul Chryst was fired Sunday evening after the lackluster start to the season
After 67 wins and three Big Ten title game appearances under Chryst, this seems like a knee-jerk move. However, it is a what have you done for me lately sport and maybe the program really needs a fresh start.
Defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard will be the interim coach and will absolutely have a chance to have the job full-time. If it is not Leonhard, there are several other solid candidates that will be interested.
Minnesota is going to run away with the Big Ten West division was the talking point all week leading up to Purdue. Oops. Minnesota lost to Purdue 20-10 in a reality check game for the Gophers.
Minnesota was a different team without Mo Ibrahim at running back, who sat out with an injury. They were held to 47 yards on the ground and Tanner Morgan threw three interceptions. The Gophers clearly were not the better team Saturday. They will need to use the bye week to correct some issues and hope Ibrahim is ready to go in two weeks.
Maryland played mistake-free football, racked up nearly 500 yards of total offense, and recorded their first victory over Michigan State since the 2016 season. A good day to be a Terp.
Taulia Tagovailoa had a great day, completing 78 percent of his passes for 314 yards and a touchdown. Antwain Littleton had a solid day running the ball too with 120 yards and a score.
This Maryland team is poised to make some noise in the conference. They host Purdue next Saturday.
