Big 12 football power rankings: TCU makes statement, Texas wins big
By Dante Pryor
10. Oklahoma Sooners (0-3, 3-3)
The Sooners have played in the Big 12 since 1998 and have never finished last in the conference. Their worst finish was tied for sixth in the first year of the conference under John Blake, who would last just three seasons. The 49-0 loss is the first shutout since 2004 and the most lopsided defeat since 2000. Could Brent Venables be one and done in Norman?
9. West Virginia Mountaineers (2-3, 0-2)
Another name on the hot seat is West Virginia head coach Neil Brown. Adding Georiga and USC transfer quarterback JT Daniels has not helped the win column. West Virginia hosts Baylor this weekend, and it doesn’t look good for the Mountaineers to notch that first win maybe until November.
8. Iowa State Cyclones (3-3, 0-3)
If Iowa State fans were worried about Matt Campbell leaving for another job this season, he might be safe. The Cyclones finally won the Cyhawk trophy for the first time in nine seasons, and that could be the high point of the season for Iowa State. For someone who is supposed to be an offensive coach, the Cyclones have scored 20 points in the last two games.
7. Texas Tech Red Raiders (3-3, 1-2)
The Red Raiders nearly pulled off the upset against the #8 Oklahoma State Cowboys in Stillwater on Saturday. If freshman quarterback Behern Morton doesn’t injure his leg, it might have been a different story. Texas Tech needed the defense to pick up the slack and fell short when it mattered most. If they get some defense, they could be trouble.
6. Baylor Bears (3-2, 1-1)
The Bears were off last week ahead of its road game in Morgantown. Baylor was exposed against Oklahoma State. They need to front-run to have success. Oklahoma State jumped out to a 23-3 lead, and Baylor could not catch up, losing 36-25. Baylor should be able to win up front against West Virginia and front-run.
