1. Penn State at Michigan

This is the game that I am most excited about and find most intriguing this year. The winner will likely face Ohio State with an undefeated record, and the loser will likely still finish 10-2 and head to a New Year’s Six game by season’s end.

We are still unsure of what both programs are this year. No. 5 Michigan (6-0) has no impressive wins outside of its 27-14 beating of Iowa (the score is a lot closer than that game was) and a 34-27 win over Maryland. Penn State is in the same boat right now — the Nittany Lions’ only real test was at Purdue (35-31 win), though Penn State also has a 41-12 win over Auburn as a resume kicker.

I think this game will be as close and hard-hitting as it gets. Both have a lot to prove and are coached by some of the best coaches in the nation. Harbaugh and Franklin both need a win this weekend desperately, and so do the programs themselves.

A top-10 win for either team would immediately cement both in the playoff discussion if they end the season with one loss. Michigan’s final game will be Ohio State, but a win this weekend will likely mean the Wolverines’ floor is an 11-1 record and a trip to the Rose Bowl. Although Penn State has a gauntlet of games coming up, I could see the same reigning true for the Lions as well.

Some rain is expected, and Michigan is hosting its annual “Maize Out” for Penn State, meaning the crowd will be as lively as ever. Some huge stars such as Michael Phelps (Phelps attended Michigan and will be the Wolverines’ honorary captain) will also be in attendance, giving this game even more hype.

Right now I am not sure who wins, although my gut tells me Michigan will take this one close. Regardless, it should be an absolute battle until the clock hits all zeros. The Penn State-Michigan game has huge implications in the Big Ten, as well as the College Football Playoff discussion, and is the game to watch this weekend.
