Texas Football: 3 takeaways from a close home win against Iowa State
By Dante Pryor
What’s next for Iowa State?
Matt Campbell and his staff have some things to fix, especially on offense. Iowa State has not been able to throw the football in Big 12 play. The Cyclones are averaging a paltry 2.2 yards per rush attempt in conference play and have yet to rush for 100 yards as a team. The offensive line has been solid in pass protection, but they haven’t been able to move defenders in the running game.
Defensively, they were solid this afternoon but had issues in critical moments. When Texas needed it –whether it be a first down or chunk yardage– they got it in critical moments. Iowa State’s margin is so low; they cannot afford the little things to go wrong like they did today.

This win was a huge culture builder for the Longhorns. Not only did they snap a three-game losing streak against the Cyclones, but they won playing Iowa State’s style. The Longhorns had 42 rush attempts to 26 pass attempts. Quinn Ewers was not flashy but managed the game well and, most importantly, did not turn the football over.
The defense played well against the run but had issues slowing receiver Xavier Hutchinson and quarterback Hunter Dekkers. Hutchinson had 154 of Dekkers’ 329 passing yards. Head coach Steve Sarkisian has to play the pass better if the ‘Horns want to win the Big 12.
