Should Deion Sanders leave Jackson State for the Power Five?
By Dante Pryor
Deion Sanders can be selective, and he should be
First, if Coach Prime is happy doing what he’s doing at Jackson State, there is nothing wrong with him staying in Mississippi and coaching at an HBCU. A black head coach has never won or had a team play for a national title. That is more about where black head coaches are hired and how few are hired.
One point of discussion regarding coach Sanders is the possibility that he wants to be the first black head coach to win a National Title at the highest level of college football. He might be the only black coaching candidate who could land a job where the ceiling of that program is a title.
Some excellent jobs are available this cycle, but only Auburn has a legitimate National Championship ceiling. College football has changed so much it is hard to think that Nebraska could be a National Championship contender again. Arizona State is intriguing because of its potential, but people have said that about ASU for years. Could it be that is who they are (an 8-win program)?
Sanders does not need the money or notoriety because he already has them. If he decides to move — and there is nothing to say that he will — (entertaining an offer and leaving are not the same), he can be as picky as he wants.
