14. Virginia Tech Hokies (2-8, 1-6)

The Hokies have lost seven straight games after a 2-1 start. The offense is scoring less than 20 points per game in the conference, negating a defense that has not been terrible. Since allowing over 40 points in their losses to North Carolina and Pitt, the Hokies’ defense has played a lot better. First-year head coach Brent Pry has had his team fighting, but they aren’t very good.

13. Virginia Cavaliers (3-7, 1-6)

The more the season goes on, the more the law of transference applies. When Cavaliers’ head coach Tony Elliot was offensive coordinator at Clemson, quarterback DJ Uiagalelei was awful. When Robert Anae ran the offense at Virginia, quarterback Brennan Armstrong was spectacular. Elliot is at Virginia and Armstrong is awful, and Uiagalelei is improved. Elliot could be the problem.

12. North Carolina State Wolfpack  (7-3, 3-3)

The Wolfpack are out of the top 25 after they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory against the Boston College Eagles on Saturday. It was the defense that let down the Wolfpack late. Eagles’ quarterback Emmet Moorhead threw for 330 yards and three touchdowns. Not having Devin Leary might have finally caught up with the ‘Pack.

11. Syracuse Orange (6-4, 3-3)

Syracuse’s issues are simple. Garrett Schrader is hurt,, which has affected running back Sean Tucker’s ability to get going this season. Schrader and Tucker are the offense for the Orange. Notre Dame has given everyone the formula for Syracuse’s defense; run at their small three-person front. Those things are the contributing factors for the Orange’s four-game losing streak.
