Big 12 Power Rankings: We are headed for a purple title game
By Dante Pryor
10. Iowa State Cyclones (4-7, 1-7)
Is head coach Matt Campbell coaching for his job? That is highly unlikely. Someone could still offer Campbell a change of scenery, however. Campbell is the best coach in Iowa State history. There have been rumors linking Campbell to Nebraska. It isn’t going to get better than 2021 at Iowa State; he’ll have more resources in Lincoln.
9. Oklahoma Sooners (6-5, 3-5)
The Sooners lost so much from last season’s team (not to mention nearly the entire coaching staff) it is easy to think the Sooners would take a step back this year. That said, the win against the ‘Pokes made life in Norman a bit better. The Sooners go bowling and look ahead to next season, which will be interesting.
8. West Virginia Mountaineers (4-7, 2-6)
Neil Brown and the Mountaineers might have had a job-saving win against Oklahoma two Saturdays ago. West Virginia has had injuries this season and a lack of depth. Their last three games (all losses) were non-competitive, save the TCU game. The Mountaineers lost to Kansas State and put Brown squarely back on the hot seat.
7. Baylor Bears (6-5, 4-4)
Baylor’s one-point loss against the Horned Frogs was the perfect metaphor for Baylor’s season. The game was close for four quarters; Blake Shapen and Craig Williams played well. When the Bears needed the offense to close, it couldn’t, going three and out twice late in the fourth quarter, and you don’t leave the door open for “Mad” Max Duggan, brother.
6. Kansas Jayhawks (6-5, 3-5)
The Jayhawks played like doormats against a motivated Texas squad, falling 55-14 in their worst loss of the season. Quarterback Jalon Daniels was off all game and Kansas looked like a tired, beat-up football team. However, the Jayhawks were ranked for the first time since 2009 and are going to a bowl for the first time since 2008. Kansas has a shot at redemption against interstate rival Kansas State this weekend.
