USC football: 3 takeaways from season-defining win over Notre Dame

2. Marcus Freeman has some decisions to make this off-season
Today’s game will bring similar complaints about Notre Dame’s offense, despite the 300-plus passing yards. Some key throws prove Marcus Freeman and his offensive staff need to consider upgrading the quarterback position seriously. Drew Pyne threw his lone interception for two reasons.
First, Braden Lenzy could have fought more for that ball. However, Pyne did not have the arm to get the ball before the defender could react. He missed a wide-open Deion Colzie up the sideline in that same play. There were too many times when Pyne did not have the arm to push the football down the field.
Speaking of the offense, Freeman has to decide on offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. Notre Dame has been unable to throw the football most of the season, and tonight’s performance was more about USC’s porous defense than it was about Notre Dame’s offense. There has been little development at wide receiver, and the offense doesn’t seem to have a counterpunch outside of its script.
Coach Freeman is on the right track. He’s recruiting well and has some good pieces, but the Irish need an upgrade at quarterback and offensive scheme if Notre Dame wants to be part of the elite.
