Colorado football: What can we expect from the Deion Sanders era?
By Dante Pryor
1. Who might follow Coach Prime to Boulder?
It had been reported that Sanders had been talking to coaching and support staff about his move to Boulder and who would possibly follow him. Footballscoop.com has reported a list of coaches who might follow Coach Prime to Boulder.
Tim Brewster: Brewster is the architect of Jackson State’s offense and one of the key people behind the development of quarterback Shedeur Sanders. The Tigers averaged 38 points per game this season. The offense averaged 447.8 yards per game and over six yards per play. Since Shedeur is likely to follow his father to Boulder, Prime wants to keep offensive continuity.
Dennis Thurman: Thurman was the defensive coordinator for one of the best defenses in FCS. The Tigers allowed 11.8 points per game and three yards per play. Reports have veteran defensive coordinator Charles Kelly joining the Colorado staff as defensive coordinator. That said, Thurman deserves an invite to be part of this staff with how well the defense performed.
Willie Simmons: Simmons is a candidate for the South Florida job. However, if he does not get that job, there is a possibility that he could join Sanders’ offensive staff. Simmons could coach the running backs and receivers or be the passing game coordinator.
Vincent Dancey: Dancey is another coach that Sanders has formed a good relationship while in the SWAC. He is another coach that Sanders plucks from the HBCU ranks. For Dancey, he’d make more money, coach better players, and have access to better facilities leaving Mississippi Valley State. A defensive coach by trade, Dancey could coach the defensive line or linebackers.
What are players likely to follow Sanders to Colorado?
Shilo Sanders: The elder of the two Sanders brothers would be in his third school, but Shilo would likely follow his father to Boulder. Sanders would add depth and experience to a secondary that is not very good. Shilo dealt with injuries this season but is a solid veteran player if he is healthy.
Shedeur Sanders: The sophomore quarterback was the catalyst for Jackson State’s offense this season. The former Jerry Rice Award winner would also likely follow his dad. How much of an adjustment would it be for Sanders to transition from the FCS to FBS?
Sy’Veon Wilkerson: Wilkerson made the Jackson State running game go this season. The Buffaloes have a solid runner in Alex Fontenot, but he’s dealt with injuries the last two seasons. Wilkerson is as good or better than any running back Colorado has.
Willie Gaines: Gaines would give the Buffs a solid, reliable slot receiver. Gaines is a value add for Colorado for depth, which they need.
Kevin Coleman: Coleman was one of two blue-chippers Prime recruited to Jackson State. He’d instantly be the best receiver in Colorado’s receiver room.
Travis Hunter: The former number-one high school player in high school would give a secondary that allowed over 260 yards per game an instant boost. Hunter is also a value add on special teams and offense.
Nyles Gaddy: The Buffaloes had nine sacks last season; Gaddy had seven by himself. He’d instantly bolster a struggling pass rush.
