3 head coaching candidates Purdue Football should consider
Purdue football was in the Big Ten championship game last Saturday and now the Boilermakers need a new head coach. Here are three interesting names to consider.
It’s been a crazy couple of weeks for Purdue football fans. Last Saturday, the Boilermakers played in their first Big Ten championship game after winning the Big Ten West.
But after Louisville head coach Scott Satterfield left for Cincinnati, it opened the door for the Cardinals to hire Jeff Brohm, a former player at the school.
Not only did Brohm play for Louisville, but he also coached the school from 2003-2008 and has been a head coach at Western Kentucky as well as at Purdue.
Brohm did an exceptional job with the Purdue football program and many believed he was one of the best head coaches in the Big Ten. The Boilermakers may have lost the Big Ten title game by 21 but they rolled up 456 yards of offense and if they didn’t kick five field goals, it could have been an upset.
It was a great hire for Louisville. Now, Purdue football needs to respond with a solid hire of its own, and here are three candidates to consider.
Jim Leonhard, Wisconsin DC
Leonhard was replaced at his alma mater by Luke Fickell, yet Leonhard was considered a favorite to get the head coaching job at Wisconsin at one time and is probably one of the most-wanted DCs in all of college football.
The Packers wanted him to run their defense a couple of years ago and that could be an option again. He said on Tuesday he wouldn’t be back with the Badgers. That was before this Purdue job officially came open, although it looked to be trending in that direction.
Leonhard would be a quality candidate. He’s done great at developing talent at Wisconsin and could bring an elite defense to Purdue.
With the right offensive staff in place, the Boilermakers could easily survive this loss and you know Leonhard would be determined to succeed and prove the Badgers wrong.
Some program is going to take a shot on Leonhard, and why not one of Wisconsin’s Big Ten West rivals?
