Colorado Football: Coach Prime is assembling an all-star coaching staff
By Dante Pryor
Sean Lewis, Head Coach, Kent State
Deion Sanders adding Kent State head coach Sean Lewis as offensive coordinator is a coup. He is one of the rising offensive coaches in the country. Lewis was a candidate for the Cincinnati job but did not get it. The former Wisconsin tight end went 24-31 at Kent State, and he was the first coach in Golden Flashes history to lead them to two bowl games.
Lewis will get a significant pay bump for moving to Boulder. A Dino Babers disciple, the Lewis hire signals that Sanders wants to run a wide-open offense that pushes the football down the field.
Willie Taggart, Former Head Coach, Florida Atlantic
Former South Florida, Oregon, Florida State, and Florida Atlantic head coach Willie Taggart’s role on the staff is yet to be determined, but it is clear that Coach Prime wants to recruit Florida. Taggart is one of the most well-respected recruiters in college football. He will likely coach the wide receivers, but his primary role is to recruit.
David Kelly, Director of Player Personnel, Florida Atlantic
Kelly served with Willie Taggart at several places, including Florida Atlantic and Oregon. Kelly has been an on-field coach in the past but will serve as either recruiting coordinator or Director of Player Personnel at Colorado.
Tim Brewster, Special Assistant/tight ends, Jackson State
Brewster is one of several former head coaches joining the staff in Boulder. Brewster was the head coach at Minnesota from 2007-2010. Brewster comes to Boulder to coach the tight ends and likely be an “unofficial” special assistant, much like he was at Jackson State.
Bill O’Boyle, Offensive Line Coach, Kent State
If you run the Veer and Shoot offense, it makes sense to hire a coach who can teach linemen how to block in that system. Bill O’Boyle, a prominent Division II head coach and veteran offensive line coach, follows Sean Lewis from Kent State to serve in the same capacity.
