Predicting where Devin Leary and top transfer portal quarterbacks will land
6. Brennan Armstrong — Wisconsin
The Badgers have a need at quarterback and want to run a more pass-happy attack. That would work well with Brennan Armstrong. Notre Dame is another team to watch here but Luke Fickell and company are hosting him for a visit and it seems like an ideal fit for both sides.
7. Luke Altmyer — Virginia
The Cavaliers are looking for a new starting quarterback after Armstrong left and Atlmyer, a guy with dual-threat capability seems like a good fit. Armstrong wasn’t exactly what Tony Elliot was used to having in a quarterback and the Ole Miss transfer is someone UVA is interested in.
8. Jeff Simms — Indiana
The former Georgia Tech starting quarterback has two years of eligibility left. He’s a talented dual threat and is more of a runner than a thrower. Some Indiana fans might compare him to Michael Penix Jr. and while he’s not quite that skilled as a passer, he would be productive. He’s also a better throwing than he gets credit for. Nebraska also hosted him for a visit but if Casey Thompson comes back, Simms is likely headed elsewhere and the Hoosiers are my pick.
10. Malik Hornsby — Nebraska
We are skipping the No. 9 QB in the transfer portal quarterback rankings because Kyron Drones has already committed to Virginia Tech in a solid move for the Hokies.
But speaking of commitments, Hornsby — the former Arkansas backup — could be one of the next transfer portal quarterbacks off the board.
The 6-foot-2, former top-200 recruit likely would have signed with Baylor if Matt Rhule didn’t leave for the NFL and, according to reports, he would be willing to sit a year potentially if Casey Thompson returned, with the chance to start for two years after.
If Nebraska can sell that in this day and age, they deserve the kid who drew comparisons once to RG3 because of a 10.6 in the 100-meter dash.
Kedon Slovis to Notre Dame football
Notre Dame has Tyler Buchner, a four-star quarterback ranked in the top 100 and is just heading into his third season with the program.
Beyond that, five-star CJ Carr is coming in for the 2024 season so it’s not like the Irish are desperate for quarterback help long-term. They do need a guy for next season though and Slovis would be a good option who should have one year left.
Things didn’t work out in Pittsburgh but in the right spot, Slovis could be a really good player and he might be the perfect option for Notre Dame football. He did have a 30-touchdown season but has 38 touchdowns compared to 24 interceptions over the last three seasons.
He would add solid depth and experience, but probably isn’t scaring anyone else away. The Irish have already met with him so it’s a realistic move and I think it makes a ton of sense for both sides.
You take that quarterback and get the best out of him, on top of the defense of Marcus Freeman and it’s easy to see the Irish having the ability to win 10 games in 2023.
