Season Overview: Did we put too much stock in Tyler Van Dyke and Mario Cristobal this season? We did not consider a couple of things. First, the Hurricanes changed offensive coordinators. Rhett Lashlee left Coral Gables for SMU. Cristobal brought in Josh Gattis to run the offense; that meant a change of philosophy and scheme. Second, Frank Ladson did not come close to duplicating what Charleston Rambo did when he transferred from Oklahoma.
There is a quit factor to consider as well. Cristobal has some cultural rot to root out at “The U” as he rebuilds the program.
2023 Outlook:
Cristobal has recruited well, but he lost quarterback Jaden Rashada to Florida, and Cormani McClain — the crown jewel of Cristobal’s class — did not sign early. McClain could still sign with the Hurricanes, but Gattis and Cristobal are banking on Van Dyke’s return to form in 2023. Miami’s recruiting class is still 3rd, so the future does look bright.
Cristobal could be playing the long game since they’ve brought in only two transfers this off-season. Oh, and the Hurricanes need an on-campus stadium in the worst way.
