Key Wins: @ Notre Dame, 16-14

Bad Losses: @ California, 27-20

Season Overview: Injuries were a major factor in Stanford’s 3-9 season. Those injuries exposed a lack of talent depth. They did have an upset win against Notre Dame but lost to Cal in the Big Game. In addition to injuries, various structural problems with the university make it hard to compete in the Pac-12.

2023 Outlook: Head coach David Shaw stepped down after Stanford’s loss to BYU. He leaves Palo Alto as the Cardinal’s all-time winningest coach. Former Sacramento State head coach Troy Taylor takes over as head coach. Taylor has extensive Pac-12 coaching experience at Utah and Washington. The question is, how much does Stanford want to be good at football?
