Alabama Football: 5 potential replacements for OC Bill O’Brien
By Dante Pryor
3. Jeff Lebby, Oklahoma OC
When legendary head coach Bob Stoops was hired at Oklahoma, he was asked why he hired Mike Leach as his offensive coordinator. He replied that he hired the offensive coach that gave him the most fits while he was the defensive coordinator at Florida. If Saban takes this approach, Lebby would be a logical candidate.
What offense did Alabama struggle most with this past season? Tennessee. Lebby was with Heupel at Central Florida and Art Briles at Baylor. Lebby met Heupel while they were players at Oklahoma. After coaching high school football in Texas, Briles hired him at Baylor, where he spent nine seasons.
Lebby’s claim to fame was the success of quarterback McKenzie Milton — who finished sixth in Heisman voting in 2017 — and Dillon Gabriel led an offense that finished fifth in 2019.
Wide receiver development has been an issue at Alabama the last two seasons, and this offense is wideout and quarterback friendly. This offense helped unlock Jayln Hiyatt at Tennessee; maybe it could help unlock Isaiah Bond or one of the many young, talented receivers that the Crimson Tide has.
Lebby is paid well at Oklahoma. Could he leave Norman for Tuscaloosa?
