Boston College football: Record number of penalties deny upset over FSU
Who would have thought that Boston College football would give Florida State their toughest battle of the season so far?
Some have even considered the Eagles to be one of the worst teams in all of the Power Five, but they didn’t look like it on Saturday against mighty Florida State. OK, well the actual non-penalty version of Boston College didn’t look all that bad.
But when it comes to penalties, Boston College broke the school record.
Not only did the Eagles break the record, the record-breaking penalty actually ended the game. It was the most devastating lack of discipline from any team that I can remember.
I don’t recall the last time that penalties could actually be attributed to the loss, but Boston College’s 18 mistakes which led to flags denied this upset bid.
Record-breaking penalty denies Boston College football
As I mentioned before, the record-breaking penalty was actually the nail in Boston College’s coffin on Saturday. It was only fitting that a game that was dominated by yellow laundry became the reason the Eagles were denied an upset on the final drive.
A facemask on a third-down stop by Boston College while trailing by two was the brutal end to a horrible day, discipline-wise.
Jeff Hafley has to be sick to his stomach knowing that his team would have had a chance at a game-winning field goal drive in the final minute had they not made stupid mistakes.
Now, the Boston College head coach’s team drops to 1-2 on the season and there may be some growing chatter about his job security.
Just brutal.
