Michigan State football: 3 potential replacements for Mel Tucker
By Dante Pryor
1. Sean Lewis, Colorado offensive coordinator
Sean Lewis leaving Kent State for Colorado was strategic on Lewis’ part. He knew his quickest path to a Power Five head coaching job would be an offensive coordinator position at a Power Five program. Lewis proved he could run a program and build an offense at Kent State. The Golden Flashes went to two bowl games under Lewis.
They’d been to two bowl games in their entire program history. Quarterback Dustin Crum threw for nearly 6,000 yards and 40 touchdowns in the two bowl seasons for Kent State (2019 and 2021). Receiver Dante Cephas had 84 receptions, 1240 receiving yards, and nine touchdowns in 2021. The Golden Flashes averaged over 30 points per game in those two seasons.
Kent State also produced in the COVID-shortened year, averaging 49.8 points per game in 2020.
Lewis’s tenure as Colorado’s offensive coordinator is off to a tremendous spot. The Buffaloes are averaging 41.3 points per game, and quarterback Shedeur Sanders is a legit Heisman candidate. He’s thrown for over 1,200 yards and ten touchdowns already this year. Lewis will be the candidate, especially if Sanders lights up Oregon and USC.
Lewis is from the Great Lakes Region. He was born in Illinois and played college football at Wisconsin. Returning to Big Ten country would not be out of the question for him.
