Alabama football got away with the most egregious facemask of all time
Missed calls are part of the game. Every team both benefits and is negatively affected by missed calls each week. But Auburn was negatively affected by one of the most egregious missed facemask penalty of all time against Alabama football.
I mean, it had to be the worst missed call in college football history.
You might think I’m overreacting, but it was that bad.
Plus, Auburn received a penalty on the same play for an illegal block in the back. Everyone in the nation expected the flag that was thrown to be on the Tide, but that wasn’t the case.
Just watch:
Horrible. Missing a call like this should be a firable offense for any official. This crew should be under fire after this because not only was it an awful missed call, but it could have gotten the return man injured.
Hugh Freeze was in the ref’s ear right after the missed call and subsequent penalty on Auburn, but the official did not even pay him any attention.
Hugh Freeze had every right to be furious
If I’m Freeze, I’m getting ejected there. My player’s head almost got ripped off going full speed. He had to change direction on the return because of the blatant facemask.
Alabama received a holding penalty on a fourth-and-1 conversion that went for a long touchdown shortly after that the announcers attributed to being a makeup call. Is that the case? Maybe, but I don’t think anything could make up for that missed facemask.
Auburn eventually had to punt after being pinned deep and boos rained down from the crowd.
Deservedly so.
