3. Will Howard, Kansas State

Will Howard is like AC/DC’s drummer. He’s considered one of the best around, not because he does anything extreme or unconventional, but because he does the conventional so well.

Howard’s numbers don’t pop off the page, but the way Auburn football will be constructed next season, the Tigers don’t need the most electric player at the position.

Howard is, primarily, a smart player who doesn’t make a great deal of mistakes.

He can also get the job done with both his legs and his arm. He gained 351 yards on 81 carries last year, and he found the end zone 9 times. He added 2,643 yards, 24 touchdowns, and just 10 interceptions through the air.

Auburn’s running game is the heart of its offense, and Howard would be a perfect supplement to that, able to contribute to it and make the throws when the defense is too focused on it.

2. Cameron Ward, Washington State

Ward was tremendous in two seasons at Washington State. As Cougar quarterback, he threw for 6,968 yards, 48 touchdowns, and added 13 scores on the ground in 25 games.

Previously at Incarnate Word, Ward was the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year and a finalist for the Walter Payton Award.

Ward is the other guy here who is not necessarily the every-down run threat that is typical of Auburn quarterbacks in recent years, but he can do it situationally. Those 13 touchdowns run contrary to his 202 yards in two years at Washington State.

Like Moore, though, sometimes a perfect fit can be sacrificed for sheer ability. Ward is the top-ranked portal quarterback in the nation, and an offense can be altered to fit a player like him.
