Bernard Pierce’s five-touchdown effort against Maryland edged out Bryant Moniz and his seven passing touchdowns to take top honors in the Week 4 vote.
This is the first ballot in which Kellen Moore did not finish first and was still in action. However, Moore remains the pace-setter with 110 overall points.
Moore was steady-as-she goes in a route of Tulsa. Of course, Moore’s steady was most other quarterbacks’ dream. He torched the Golden Hurricane for four touchdown passes. Other big movers this week were Houston’s Case Keenum, who breezed past Georgia State. Lone Star State mate Lance Dunbar had a big week for North Texas and got on the board, as did Southern Miss quarterback Austin Davis.
The entire Week 4 ballot is included after the jump. Be sure to check out the respective home sites of each #Detmer Award voter. It’s an outstanding panel that does a great job covering the nation.

Wait a minute…North Texas won a game? And they beat someone from the Big Ten? Holy crap! Lance Dunbar was a big reason why as he ran for 127 yards on the ground and caught 7 passes for 152 yards and a TD.
2. Bernard Pierce, RB, Temple
Temple shocked Maryland 38-7 and Bernard Pierce was a big reason why as he accounted for 149 yards on the ground and ran for 5 Touchdowns!
3. Austin Davis, QB, Southern Miss
Any time a Conference USA team beats an ACC team you have to take note. Southern Miss upended Virginia this weekend by the score of 30-24 and Davis was a big reason why. Davis completed 27 of 41 for 313 yards and 3 TD against 0 INTs.
4. Blaine Gautier, QB, Louisiana
Let’s hear it for the Ragin’ Cajuns pulling off the big upset of FIU. FIU was fresh off of wins against Louisville and UCF so not many were expecting this. Phil Steele picked these Cajuns to come in dead last in the Sun Belt (after Western Kentucky and North Texas) but QB Blaine Gautier led the charge on Saturday going 14/26 for 221 yds and 3 TD in the upset. Former Miss State assistant coach Mark Hudspeth is off to a 3-1 start with this team (the loss was to Okie State).
5. Bryant Moniz, QB, Hawaii
Moniz would be a lot higher after a performance like he had this week but it was against UC Davis. Moniz tossed 4 first quarter TDs to lead Hawaii to a 28-0 first quarter margin. Then he threw three more in the second quarter and Hawaii was up 49-0 going into the half. Moniz finished 30/40 for 424 yards and 7 TD against 0 INT. Oh yeah, he also rushed for 50 yards on 5 carries.

2. Bernard Pierce, RB Temple — Pierce laid waste to Maryland, 32 carries for 149 yards and 5 TDs
3. Deon Long, WR New Mexico — 376 all-purpose yards: 9 rec for 209 yards and 3 TDs and a 98-yard kickoff return for a TD.
4. Kellen Moore, QB Boise State — I don’t care that he didn’t wow me. He’s so good we take this for granted. 23-29 for 279 yards, 4 TDs 0 INT
5. Case Keenum, QB Houston — 29-34 for 415 yards and 2 TD

2. RB Bernard Pierce-Temple
Coming into this week Pierce had gone for over 100 yards in 2 of his first 3 games and week 4 ended up being no different. Not only did Pierce clear tha 100 yard mark with ease his 5 rushing TD’s gives him the most rushing TD’s in the country thus far this season (12). Not bad for a kid from a MAC school.
3. RB Bradley Rutley-San Jose State
Don’t know the name? Yea either did New Mexico State apparently as they allowed Rutley to rush for 209 yards and 2 TD’s. Rutley’s total yardage and ypc may eclipse that of Pierce but you can’t discount who Pierce did his against (Maryland) v. who Rutley played against (New Mexico State)

Health issues cut Bernard Pierce’s outstanding freshman season short, and limited him vastly in 2010. But to quote Stevie Janikowski, against Maryland Pierce looked “10-feet tall, and strong as a ox.”
His four touchdowns by halftime slammed the door on any rally hope Maryland may have had, and he tacked on one more in the second half for good measure. Had Steve Addazio not pulled on the reins, Pierce could have made a legitimate push for Howard Griffith’s modern era rushing touchdown record of eight in one game.
2. Bryant Moniz, Hawaii
So it was against FCS UC Davis; Bryant Moniz could have scored seven touchdowns in one half against Waikki High and it would still be impressive. Even getting seven possessions in one half is impressive, and converting them all into passing scores is exponentially so.
3. Shaquil Barrett, Colorado State
The Ram linebacker returned a Utah State fumble for a touchdown to kickstart life into struggling CSU and cut a double-digit deficit down to four. He also made a sack and finished with a team-best 14 tackles.
4. Kellen Moore, Boise State
Kellen Moore is so good so consistently, it becomes easy to take his game for granted. My original ballot didn’t feature Moore, but I had to rethink that decision. Four touchdown passes. Twenty-three completions on 29 attempts. Two-hundred, seventy-nine yards. And that’s a rather pedestrian output for him, against an opponent that finished 2010 in the USA Today Top 25.
5. Lance Dunbar, North Texas
North Texas almost saw a 24-0 lead evaporate against Indiana, but the Mean Green held off the Hoosier rally. The reason UNT was even in such position was Lance Dunbar. He accounted for over 270 yards between his rushing and receiving, and scored a touchdown.
