Detmer Award Week 5 Vote: Western Michigan Represents; Keenum’s Hot Pursuit
By Kyle Kensing
A down week for runaway #DetmerAward leader Kellen Moore provided some of the Week 5 stars an opportunity to climb the ladder. Making the greatest leap was this week’s top vote recipient Alex Carder, quarterback of Western Michigan. His 39 points and seven first place votes set the pace. Teammate Jordan White also had a big week and is now in the top 10.
Case Keenum finished No. 2 in votes this week, and is just seven points behind Kellen Moore for the top spot overall. The complete rundown follows after the jump.
#1 Alex Carder, QB, Western Michigan- I said this was a potential upset to watch out for and I didn’t lie. Carder led the Broncos (3-2) over UConn 38-31. He threw for 479 yards and 5 TDs (including 3 in the 4th quarter).
#2 J.J. McDermott, QB, SMU- led SMU past TCU by going 23/45 for 349 with 4 TDs. This was a big upset and the biggest win I can remember for the 4-1 Mustangs.
#3 Case Keenum, QB, Houston- Keenum is on the verge of breaking records and he kept on plugging away against UTEP with 471 yds and 2 TD. Houston is now 5-0 and there is no loss in site for the Cougars.
#4 Bryant Moniz, QB, Hawaii- Passed for 410 yards and 4 TD over a Louisiana Tech team that is better than their record indicates.
#5 Tim Jefferson, QB, Air Force- put his team over the top with a QB keeper in OT to help his team beat rival Navy 35-34 despite losing an 18 pt lead earlier in the game. Jefferson led the Falcons to victory with a rushing TD and two more passing. He had 60 yards on the ground and went 9/10 for 136 through the air.

1. Matt Christian, QB, New Mexico State — 16-27 passing for 296 yards, 4 TD 0 INT, with 101 rushing yards and another TD on the ground to drive the Aggies to embarrass rival New Mexico on its home field.
2. Case Keenum, QB, Houston — 30-46 for 471 yards and 2 TD
3. Bryant Moniz, QB, Hawaii — 34-55 for 410 yards, 4 TD 0 INT in a somewhat surprising win far away from home in Louisiana.
4. Kriss Proctor, QB, Navy — 14-24 passing for 132 yards, 1 TD 1 INT, with 37 carries for 134 yards and 3 TD on the ground in what seemed like a one-man almost-comeback against Air Force
5. Royce Pollard, WR, Hawaii — 10 rec, 216 yards, 3 TDs.

1. QB Alex Carder-Western Michigan
A good friend of mine told me in the preseason to watch this kid play. He was absolutely right as Carder has been a dominant force in the MAC this season. Putting up over 400 yards passing and 5 TD’s is a pretty good way to get my top vote this week.
2. RB Joe Banyard-UTEP
Last year Banyard got pressed into duty at times due to injuries to RB Donald Buckram and was solid, but not many people say Baynard ever running for 240 yards in a game like he did this weekend.
3. WR Royce Pollard-Hawaii
Last week I put Bryant Moniz on my ballot but this week its his WR that deserves the praise. Pollard was the top returning WR for the Warriors this season, his 216 yard day on Saturday shows you why Hawaii has seen little drop off.
4. RB Kendrick Hardy-Southern Miss
Hardy is somewhat of a fluky RB, he’s had two weeks (this week included) where he’s run for over 150 yards and then the other three weeks he’s had less than 40. Either way his 172 yards were key to beating up on Rice.
5. WR Jordan White-Western Michigan
His QB got our top vote but we could not overlook his ability to get open and make the catch. His 12 catches for 173 yards and 2 TD’s were huge on Saturday. All this guy seems to do is catch the football.

1t. Alex Carder and Jordan White, Western Michigan
The first tie I’ve ever given my first place vote is well-deserved. Bill Cubit’s prolific passing duo helped power Western Michigan’s defeat of reigning Big East champion UConn. Jordan White is putting together a season very much like another MAC wide receiver, Bowling Green’s Freddie Barnes. Barnes generated All-America buzz for his help in 2009; I suspect White will soon be doing the same. Carder meanwhile threw three of his five touchdowns Saturday in the fourth quarter. Talk about clutch.
3. Matt Christian, New Mexico State
Matt Christian gave UNM interim head coach George Barlow a rude welcome to the ranks. He whipped the Lobos with both his arm (296 yards on just 16 passes) and feet (101 yards and a touchdown).
4. Charles Sims, Houston
Case Keenum had his typical big statistic passing game, but Charles Sims was the peanut butter to the passing game’s chocolate. Two of his 12 carries were good for touchdowns, and he racked up 111 yards on those limited opportunities. He also took one of Keenum’s passes to the house for a touchdown, giving Sims three on the night. His two receptions were good for 90 yards. Sims’s ability to provide that potent secondary punch is what makes UH such a dangerous offensive team.
5. Casey Pachall, TCU
Deja vu all over again. The Horned Frogs suffered their second loss to a non-conference neighbor, digging a deep early hole and trying to claw back in the fourth quarter. Casey Pachall nearly bridged the gap singlehanded, throwing all three of his touchdown passes in the final stanza to help force overtime.
