Isaiah Johnson is leaving the Kansas Jayhawks and transferring to the South Carolina Gamecocks for the 2015 season.

Pass defense was a glaring weakness for South Carolina last year and that was made perfectly clear in the Gamecocks’ season opener when they allowed Texas A&M to throw for more than 511 yards against their young secondary.

One day after wrapping up their spring practices with their spring game, South Carolina got a significant addition to help the Gamecocks’ secondary with the transfer of strong safety Isaiah Johnson from Kansas.

Johnson shared the news of his transfer via Twitter and will be eligible immediately as a graduate transfer. After starting all 24 games during his two years at Kansas, Johnson brings experience and talent to a roster in need of help on the back-end of the defense.

Johnson was the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year in 2013 after he transferred from Iowa Western Community College after beginning his college career at Western Carolina in 2011.

The Cary, N.C. native should be thrilled to have the chance to compete in the SEC against elite talent and for a program accustomed to winning under head coach Steve Spurrier. Even in a down year for South Carolina last year, they still won double what Johnson won during his two-years at Kansas when he played for a pair of 3-9 teams.

Johnson finished second on the team last year in tackles with 75 and had five interceptions in 2013 when he was also named an honorable mention choice in the Big 12.
