Ole Miss junior left tackle Laremy Tunsil was arrested on assault charges after defending his mother from his stepfather.

Laremy Tunsil was arrested Friday on domestic violence charges after he punched his stepfather after he shoved Tunsil’s mother, according to ESPN’s Brett McMurphy.

The incident took place Thursday and Tunsil and his mother, Desiree Tunsil have since filed charges against the stepfather, Lindsey Miller.

Tunsil was an All-SEC pick last year as a sophomore and was part of Hugh Freeze’s lauded 2013 recruiting class as a five-star recruit and No. 5 overall player. That class also included No. 1 player Robert Nkemdiche, No. 1 wide receiver and No. 1 safety Tony Conner.

“We can confirm that Laremy Tunsil turned himself in and was arrested for a misdemeanor, domestic violence-simple assault,” Freeze said in a via ESPN. “The incident occurred Thursday night and involves Laremy defending his mother against his stepfather.

“Laremy realizes he could have handled it differently, but I am proud of him for standing up for his mother and protecting his family. Laremy and his mother have also pressed charges against the stepfather. As we gather more facts, we will act and make decisions accordingly.”

Freeze is recovering from a broken leg and dislocated in the Rebels Peach Bowl loss to TCU but is expected to be ready for the Sept. 5 opener against UT Martin. He is a projected top-10 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft should he declare early and leave Ole Miss after his junior year.

I wouldn’t expect any type of discipline from Freeze if the report is accurate and Tunsil was protecting his mother from any further action from the stepfather. As Freeze said, Tunsil could have handled it differently, but until more details are clear, protecting his mom from an attack is an action that should be commended.
