The 2015 college football kickoff is now only nine days away, which is also the same record number of interceptions thrown in a single game by a certain Florida Gators quarterback.

Nobody likes having interception records, unless of course they play defensive back. But for a quarterback, interceptions are not something for which you want to be remembered. The single-game record for interceptions is held by a former Florida Gators quarterback, but it may not be a name you’d think of.

No, we aren’t talking about Steve Spurrier, or Danny Wuerffel, or Jesse Palmer or Tim Tebow. It’s not even Rex Grossman…shocking as that might be.

The single game record for interceptions, 9 of them, was by John Reaves against Auburn on Nov. 1, 1969.

The Gators came in 6-0, riding the passing arm of Reaves during the season, but against the Auburn Tigers it was Reaves arm that would unravel the mighty Gators.

Reaves attempted 66 passes, nine of which fell into the waiting arms of Tigers defenders, three of them to Auburn linebacker Sonny Ferguson. Linebacker Bobby Strickland and cornerbacks Buddy McLinton and Larry Willingham all had two picks each as well.

The Tigers took down the undefeated Gators 38-12, which would end up as the only loss on the 1969 season for Florida who finished with a 9-1-1 record. Reaves finished the season with 24 TD passes and 19 interceptions, and ended his Florida career with 7,549 passing yards, which was the most in NCAA history at the time.
