As the 2016 season begins, we take a look at why the Oklahoma football program could be on their way to a national title this season.

34-14. That was the score of the final game of the season for the Oklahoma Sooners, a loss to the Clemson Tigers in the College Football Playoff national semifinal.

Even in defeat, the 2015 season was one that the Sooners should have been proud of. With a new starting quarterback coming into the season in Baker Mayfield, the Sooners were not really sure what to expect. And yet he tore up defenses week after week and led  the program to a 10-2 record and national respectability once again.

With Mayfield returning and a loaded roster on both sides of the football, the Sooners look to prove that last year was not a fluke. If anything, recent history is on their side. They have 36 10-win years in their history, the most of any program and 22 11-win seasons also the most of any program.

With a friendly conference schedule, the Sooners look to take that next step and win their first national championship game in more than a decade.

Here’s a closer look at five reasons why the Sooners could win the 2016 National Title.
