In one of the stranger interviews to start the new year, former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden discussed players not having dads on Mike and Mike.

Retired college football head coaches aren’t always the most politically correct people. Although he’s been out of the spotlight for some time now, former Florida State Seminoles head coach Bobby Bowden was in hot water on Wednesday morning for making some very controversial remarks.

Bowden stopped by the set of ESPN’s hit radio show Mike and Mike to talk about his old coaching days and the current landscape of college football. During his interview, Bowden began talking about how many of his former players grew up without fathers or male role models in their lives.

That alone isn’t a controversial statement, but Bowden then proceeded to stay that his players wanted to grow up and “be men like their mommas”, which is apparently why they wear earrings. You can watch the entire segment of Bowden’s interview below.

Before making those strange statements, Bowden did preface it by saying that he used to joke about these things. Still, it was a pretty weird thing to say, and people on Twitter aren’t exactly thrilled about those comments.

Let’s also not forget that Bowden is 87 years old and was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. This is an old football coach with a different perspective on the world than the average American. These comments weren’t being intentionally offensive, but Bowden is still going to be in hot water after this appearance.
