Texas football is reportedly one of two finalists for Notre Dame quarterback transfer Malik Zaire.

Not often do you see a Power Five program with a solid young starting quarterback take a chance on a graduate transfer with a history of injuries. That’s exactly what Texas football is preparing to do with former Notre Dame dual-threat Malik Zaire.

The Fighting Irish quarterback announced his decision to transfer earlier this offseason and there were some teams immediately in the mix such as Wisconsin, Florida and Texas. Harvard also joined the mix and Michigan State was previously mentioned as a possible destination.

However, he narrowed things down to four and looked to have set a decision date for the middle of May. Rumor has it that he’s postponing his decision and wants to enjoy his graduation before making a decision on his future.

According to Anwar Richardson of OrangeBloods.com, Texas is one of two remaining finalists for Zaire. This should come as a surprise seeing as Shane Buechele is considered the clear starter for the Longhorns come fall.

Buechele passed for 2,958 yards and 21 touchdowns as a true freshman for the Longhorns under Charlie Strong’s watch, but Tom Herman may be looking for some insurance. While Buechele has the talent to succeed in the Big 12, he wants to make sure he has a guy like Zaire in place just in case the sophomore gunslinger gets injured.

Could this mess with Buechele’s confidence, though? Absolutely.

Herman wants Zaire to join the Longhorns, but fans have grown accustomed to calling Buechele their quarterback. This potential transfer would be interesting, to say the least.
