Links at Lunch: Richmond’s Coaching Shake-Up, Notre Dame Throwbacks, Another New Cy-Hawk
By Kyle Kensing
Just when it seemed nothing could continue to shock after last week’s Miami bombshell, the Championship Subdivision had its own genuine shocker yesterday. LaTrell Scott resigned as Richmond’s head coach before beginning what would have been his second season. UR’s student newspaper, The Collegian, did an outstanding job covering this story’s developments. Scott received his second DUI arrest of the last 5-10 years, Collegian reporter Andrew Prezioso writes. Wayne Lineburg was named the Spiders’ interim head coach with just 10 days until kickoff this morning. Lineburg coached under former Spider and current Bowling Green head coach Dave Clawson, as well as serving as the Spiders’ offensive coordinator last season.
North Carolina is the only program facing a coaching situation as unusual as Richmond’s. Never one to shy from controversy, Gregg Doyel suggests the Tar Heels hire Randy Shannon, whose own former Miami program is walking the coals of likely NCAA punishment.
- The Good: Notre Dame’s throwbacks for this year’s rivalry showdown with Michigan were unveiled, and they are sharp. SPORTSbyBROOKS took a break from trolling athletic media department officials to post a snapshot via Facebook.
- The Bad: Tennessee safety Janzen Jackson’s touted talent will never shine on Rocky Top; at least, not in orange-and-white. He was removed from the team for unspecified actions as Dr. Saturday reports.
- The Ugly: Maryland’s new Under Armour uniforms created quite the buzz yesterday. They are getting plenty of critiques, particularly from Baltimore Sun sportswriter Matt Vensel.
- The Cy-Hawk Trophy lampooned basically everywhere on the sports blogosphere is gone before it got started. The jokes lobbed at the new trophy prompted the sponsor Iowa Corn Growers to seek fan input for a new trophy, per Black Hearts Gold Pants. Personally, I hope the prototype find a home in, as I suggested, a John Steinbeck essay competition.
- Jordan Jefferson’s possible (likely?) suspension for the Sept. 3 opener vs. Oregon should be a cause for concern amongst Ducks, writes Autzen Zoo.
- Soaring To Glory ranks the most difficult of the ACC’s schedules.
- The Penn State offensive line will be key to the Nittany Lions pursuit of a surprise run to the top of the Big Ten Leaders division. Victory Bell Rings examines that unit.
- Local product Ka’Deem Carey will prove vital to Arizona’s running game and is one of the baker’s dozen of freshmen I tabbed as one to watch. Carey seems to relish the responsibility, according to FOX Sports Arizona’s Steve Rivera.
