The Detmer Award Week 2 Vote: T.Y. Hilton Checks in at No. 1

facebooktwitterreddit

With another week in the books, it’s time for another Detmer Award poll. Boise State had the week off, which gave others a chance to climb — and climb is precisely what new overall No. 1 T.Y. Hilton did. The runaway Week 2 leading vote getter jumped into first place on the season, scoring 55 points and eight first place votes this week. Case Keenum remains in hot pursuit as he assumes second place, and Kellen Moore falls to third on the bye.

Kevin, College Football Zealots

    1. Eric Page, WR, Toledo

Page was best player on the field when Rockets attempted their upset bid of the Buckeyes. The Rockets fell short but Page had a great game including TD receptions of 6 and 66 yards from two different QBs. Page finished the day with 12 receptions for 145 yards and 2 TDs. He also had 65 yards on two kick returns.

2. T.Y. Hilton, WR, FIU

Had seven catches for 201 yards as his team won a 24-17 game at Louisville. In the second quarter he was responsible for two straight scores (on catches of 74 and 83 yards) to put FIU up 21 to 3 and help spurn them on to victory. He also had two kick returns for 67 (an average of 33 yards per return).

3. Eugene Cooper, WR, Bowling Green

They might have played Morgan State but Cooper still had a very impressive outing. 6 receptions for 134 yards and 4 TDs! Yeah, I’ll take that.

John Owens, Fear The Wave; Tulane Hullabaloo

    1. Case Keenum, QB Houston: Some would argue that his big numbers this week are a result of inferior competition. To be sure, his competition was inferior, but his numbers were so incredible that it didn’t matter: 458 yards and five touchdowns.

2. Bernard Pierce, RB Temple: This week Pierce only had 18 carries, fewer than half of the teams total. But, not to worry, Pierce responded with 150 yards and three touchdowns on those 18 carries, for an average of 8.3 yards a carry. If ever there were a definition of production, that could be it.

3. T.Y. Hilton, WR Florida International: 200 yards and two touchdowns sounds like a decent day for a college quarterback. Then you realize that Hilton is a receiver, and then your jaw drops. This on only seven catches.

4. Quinton Patton, WR Louisiana Tech: Some would say this is a stretch. But even though his competition was weak this week, Patton still grabbed eight catches for 211 yards and two scores. That’s phenomenal, even if you’re playing Central Arkansas.

5. G.J. Kinne, QB Tulsa: His numbers this week were good, 241 yards and three touchdowns. But the number that really stood out was his QB rating of 169.5. That, combined with how easy he made it look against Tulane, gets him on the list.

Matt Elder, Buffalo Bills Draft

    1. WR T.Y. Hilton-FIU
I don’t see how anybody else could be the unanimous #1 pick this week, Hilton’s ability to score at any time from any position make him so dangerous. However its his improved route running and ability to get behind the defense that have draw rave reviews thus far this season.

2. WR Quinton Patton-Louisiana Tech
He actually out performed Hilton in terms of yards, and receptions but given that Hilton had his performance against a BCS AQ school we gave him the edge. Patton is a dangerous down the field WR who has excellent body control and concentration he’s not a big guy (6’1, 195) so he has to utilize other skills to make big plays.

3. WR Josh Jarboe-Arkansas State
Name look familiar? It should as Jarboe was considered one of the premiere HS talents in the country when he was going through the commitment process. He ended up signing with Oklahoma but never played there as he got himself into a little bit of trouble and took off for Troy. Once at Troy he never really got a shot to play so he transferred once again and this time to Arkansas State. I think he’s starting to fit in nicely.

4. RB Bernard Pierce-Temple
Quite possibly one of the most consistent backs in the entire nation, all Pierce does is pick up positive yardage and score TD’s. A gifted and well balanced runner Pierce has a huge test coming up this weekend v. Penn State who will be looking for redemption after losing to Alabama.

5. LB Korey Jones-Wyoming
A blitzing terror off the edge, Jones had three sacks on Saturday. Granted they came against a FCS opponent but his ability to blitz effective will give Wyoming fans hope for the rest of this season.

Chad Smith, 7220 Report

    1. Case Keenum QB Houston (458 passing yards, 5 TDs)

2. T.Y. Hilton WR Florida International (209 yards, 2 TDs)

3. Robbie Rouse RB Fresno State (169 rushing yards and a punt return TD)

4. Josh Jarboe WR Arkansas State (162 yards, 2 TDs)

5. Korey Jones DE Wyoming (3 sacks in 3 consecutive plays…enough said)

Brett Hein, The Upset Blog

    1. TY Hilton, Florida Int’l – 201 receiving yards

2. Robert Turbin, Utah State – 180 rushing yards, 2 TDs

3. Bobby Rainey, WKU – 131 rushing yards

4. Casey Pachall, TCU – 20-25 for 206 yards and 2 TDs

5. Ronnie Hillman, SDSU – 117 rushing yards, currently the nations #2 rusher.

Kyle Kensing

    1. T.Y. Hilton
Hilton pretty much locked up the first place vote by halftime Friday night against Louisville, averaging nearly 80 yards per reception on his first two catches.

2. Eric Page
Toledo’s aerial offense ran almost exclusively through Page. Had the Rockets converted on fourth down, he likely would have been the target and would have snapped Ohio State’s 80-year in-state win streak. That probably would have earned him No. 1.

3. Bernard Pierce
The Owls have blown out two opponents in a row, which would seemingly limit Pierce’s production. His carries are low, but his yards and scores are both high.

4. Ronnie Hillman
Hillman’s two touchdowns and 117 yards rushing were critical to San Diego State’s road win.

5. Case Keenum
The Houston quarterback has seven touchdowns and zero interceptions. Saturday vs. North Texas he scored four touchdowns in the second half and five total and racked up over 450 yards.
