Week 7 Detmer Award Vote: Kellen Moore Back On Top
By Kyle Kensing
Kellen Moore’s leading Boise State to a 50-point, Mountain West Conference win put the decided preseason favorite back on top of the Detmer Award vote. His closest competition, Case Keenum, had the week off. Ronnie Hillman and Bernard Pierce maintain striking distance, while Chandler Harnish’s zero touchdown day actually yielded the most first place votes.
Defensive dynamo Vinny Curry climbed into the top 12 after an inspiring 3.5 sack effort to lead Marshall’s C-USA defeat of Rice. Find out who else made an impact on this week’s voting as the esteemed panel of non-AQ bloggers breaks down the top performances from Week 7. - #1 Chandler Harnish, QB, NIU- led the Huskies to win over a good Western Michigan team by the score of 51 to 22. Harnish threw for 203 yards and ran for 229 yards on just 14 carries.
#2 Kellen Moore, QB, Boise State- led the Broncos to a 63-13 route of Colorado State in their first MWC game. Moore only had 4 incompletions as he went 26 of 30 for 338 yards and 4 TDs.
#3 J.J. McDermott, QB, SMU- SMU went to 5-1 (3-0 in C-USA) and gave UCF their third loss of the season in the process. J.J. was the key as he took to the air for 358 yards and 2 TD.
#4 Blaine Gautier, QB, Louisiana- Gautier led Mark Hudspeth’s UL Ragin Cajun’s to a 20 point victory over North Texas and a 6-1 record (4-0 in the Sun Belt). Gautier 14 of 20 for 238 and 4 TDs.
#5 Ronnie Hillman, RB, San Diego State- Ran for 172 yards and 2 TD in the Aztecs 41-27 win over the Falcons of Air Force.

- 1. DE Vinny Curry-Marshall
For just a moment let’s forget about the tragic circumstances under which Curry entered this game on Saturday because what he did one that field was one of the most dominant and destructive performances we have seen in some time. His 9 tackles, 4 TFL’s, 3.5 sacks, and forced fumble are more defense than some entire defensive lines put up this past Saturday. That alone is worthy of our #1 spot. In regards to the passing of Curry’s mother earlier this week we want to commend the young man on making the brave decision to play as we know this was probably the toughest game of his entire life. We wish him nothing but the best and future success and may his mother rest in peace.
2. QB Kellen Moore-Boise State
This will have been the first time in a few weeks that Moore has even made my ballot. It’s not that I don’t find his performances to be impressive, it’s just that I find him to be getting almost overhyped. Even when he does the most basic things well many analysts want to act like he is moving water. I just don’t see it that way, however when you go 26 of 30 for 336 yards and 4 TD’s you come very close to have a perfect game and for that Kellen gets back onto my ballot.
3. QB Chandler Harnish-Northern Illinois
So some people are going to think I’m nuts with this choice on my ballot, because Harnish neither ran nor threw for a TD. Why I selected him though was because it’s extremely rare to see a QB run for over 200 yards in a game, and when you combine that with Harnish’s 203 passing yards you have a QB who was responsible for 432 total yards of offense all by himself. He continually put NIU into scouting position and was unstoppable all game long.

- 1. Bernard Pierce (he’s really overdue on my list, on pace for 29 rushing TDs this year!)
2. Vinny Curry (another guy who should be getting more attention, half a sack behind the nation’s leader)
3. Kellen Moore
4. Ronnie Hillman
5. Chandler Harnish (no TDs in the game this week but 432 combined yards rushing and passing!)

- 1. Vinny Curry, Marshall
He’s been among the nation’s best defensive players all season, and in a Conference USA win over Rice Saturday had perhaps his best performance. Curry recorded 3.5 sacks playing under
2. Kellen Moore, Boise State
It’s almost unfair how good Kellen Moore is. He had no problems dissecting the Colorado State defense, completing almost 90 percent of his attempts and scoring four touchdowns.
3. Bernard Pierce, Temple
Temple’s stud running back has been healthy all season, and it shows. Bernard Pierce scored two more touchdowns to keep that 30-score mark within reach.
4. Ronnie Hillman, San Diego State
Pierce and Ronnie Hillman were essentially interchangable this week. Hillman recovered from turnover woes in the Aztecs’ two losses at Michigan and vs. TCU, punishing the slower Air Force defense much of the second half to give SDSU a big Mountain West win.
5. Chandler Harnish, Northern Illinois
Chandler Harnish and NIU declared authoritatively that it’s still the team to beat in the MAC West until someone proves otherwise, dismantling Western Michigan behind the quarterback’s 400-plus yards of offense. Harnish would be higher had he reached the end zone, instead playing a football version of John Stockton role in setting up teammates.
