Case Keenum’s record setting career and season has earned him the No. 1 spot for Week 8, but Kellen Moore remains the Detmer Award’s top overall vote recipient — by all of one point. This past Saturday (or Tuesday, in one instance) was a tremendous day for non-automatic qualifying players, but who joined Keenum and Moore as the best of the best? Read on and find out how the panel voted, and be sure to visit each of the panelists’ home site.

#1 Dominique Davis, QB, East Carolina- led the 3-4 Pirates to a 38-35 win over Navy. Davis had an eye-popping stat line of 40/45 for 372 yards and 2 TD. He also set two NCAA passing records in this game. He broke the single game record for straight completions (formerly held by Tee Martin and some dude named Aaron Rodgers) and he broke the mark for completions in a row with 36 (also formerly held by that Aaron Rodgers guy- not sure where he vanished to).

#2 Case Keenum, QB, Houston- This just in…Case Keenum is pretty good. Keenum started out the game with a 70 TD pass to Patrick Edwards and he connected on 5 more before the game was over. Keenum’s stat line? 24/28 for 376 and 6 TD. Dominique Davis wasn’t the only record setter on Saturday. Keenum became the FBS career leader in Total Offense by surpassing Timmy Chang of Hawaii.

#3 Ryan Aplin, QB, Arkansas State- led his team to a victory over FIU 34-16. Ran for 164 yards and 2 TDs on 21 attempts. Of yeah, he also passed for 147 yards and a TD.

#4 Bobby Rainey, RB, Western Kentucky- Western Kentucky pulled the upset of the upstart Ragin Cajuns of Louisiana behind Rainey’s 206 yards rushing and 3 TD. He also had a pass completion for 31 yards.

#5 G.J. Kinne, QB, Tulsa Kinne was impressive in leading the Golden Hurricanes over the Owls of Rice even if their uniforms weren’t. His stat line? 21/34 328 3 TD, 1 TD rushing.

1. Case Keenum, Houston: One can talk all day about system quarterbacks, and no doubt that Case Keenum flourishes in a Kevin Sumlin offense conducive to big passing figures. But to throw the nation’s best touchdown-to-interception ratio while also racking up the most yards takes a special talent. That’s exactly what Keenum’s done thus far, and in Week 8 contributed to his lofty statistics with six touchdowns and completing an almost incomprehensible 87 percent of his attempts.

2. Dominique Davis, East Carolina: On the topic of consistency, how about East Carolina’s Dominique Davis actually besting Keenum’s 87 with an EIGHT-NINE percent completion rating…on 17 more attemps! That’s right, Davis went 40-for-45 in the Pirates’ gotta-have-it win over Navy. He’d be No. 1, but had “just” two touchdowns.

3. Bobby Rainey, Western Kentucky: Louisiana-Lafayette had been the surprise upstart of the Sun Belt Conference, until an unlikely, new upstart stole the spotlight. The Hilltoppers won their second consecutive big Sun Belt game courtesy of Bobby Rainey’s 206 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

4. Ryan Aplin, Arkansas State: The RedWolves quarterback Ryan Aplin carried, somewhat literally, ASU to a key win over Florida International. See, Aplin went for 164 yards rushing, most of it in the second half, and two touchdowns, both in the second half. He also passed for a score in the most offensive outpouring FIU has allowed an opponent all season.

5. Kellen Moore, Boise State: Has Kellen Moore in fact set a bar too high for himself? He could probably be No. 1 every week, but his own standards are so lofty that a game like his Saturday vs. Air Force is simply the norm: 23-for-29, 281 yards, three touchdowns with a pick.
