DB Greg Reid Dismissed From Florida State

Talented defensive back and returns specialist Greg Reid was dismissed from the Florida State roster on Wednesday morning. The dismissal comes less than a month after Reid was charged with driving on a suspended license and marijuana possession.

Reid’s absence will leave a considerable void in both the Seminole secondary and special teams. He intercepted five passes over the last two seasons, and in 2010 had a team high 14 pass break-ups. His numbers dipped in 2011 from the previous campaign, partially due to time missed from another legal issue but also because opposing defenses threw in his direction less.

Reid was a dangerous punt returner last season, getting 37 opportunities and scoring a touchdown on one. His 11.2 yards per return ranked No. 17 among all such specialists in college football. Reid was set to enter the season all but assured of surpassing Deion Sanders in the FSU record books as the program’s most prolific punt returner.

Replacing Reid in the secondary will not prove easy either, though head coach Jimbo Fisher has recruited masterfully in his few years as Seminole head coach. And with coordinator Mark Stoops, defense has been the hallmark of each of the last two FSU teams. Seminoles.com blogger Brandon Mellor took a detailed look at the possibilities, which include highly touted true freshman Ronald Darby.
