Alabama self-reported 27 rules violations across its entire athletic program this week, four of which were related to football. The majority of the remaining 23 violations concerned the men’s basketball program.
The four football violations were: 1) providing a scholarship check to a recruit before he was certified by the NCAA, 2) accepting two players’ “friend requests” on Facebook before the date established by the NCAA, 3) texting a recruit’s father and 4) giving recruits impermissible documents.
Texting a recruit is no longer a violation. However, the transgression occurred before the texting rule was adjusted. As a result, one coach is not allowed to call recruits for 30 days and another coach may not contact two specific recruits for 60 days.
None of the Alabama players have been suspended or will miss playing time as a result of the violations.
The Crimson Tide begins the 2012 regular season September 1 against Michigan at Cowboys Stadium. Both teams are ranked in the pre-season Top 10.
