ESPN.com Notre Dame reporter Matt Fortuna reports Fighting Irish quarterback Everett Golson will sit out the start vs. BYU. Golson was struggling with concussion symptoms throughout the week, opening the door for both Tommy Rees and Andrew Hendrix.

The redshirt freshman Golson has shared snaps with Rees since the latter returned from a Week 1 suspension. Brian Kelly has supported Golson as his exclusive starter throughout the season, despite Golson’s struggles. He has just four touchdown passes and a sub-60 percent completion average. The dual threat quarterback Golson has been used modestly as a ball carrier.

A controversy has lingered over the position since Rees led a scoring drive in Week 2 against Purdue. Turnovers plagued Rees in 2011, but thus far in 2012 he has yet to throw an interception. The Salt Lake Tribune is reporting Rees is getting the start.

Should Golson be completely unavailable, Kelly can continue to operate with the two-quarterback system, using Rees in the fashion he’s been accustomed this season and Hendrix as the zone-read option play maker. Hendrix averaged better than six yards per carry on 25 carries last season.
