Bob Davie installed the option offense at New Mexico, believing it would give the Lobos the best chance to win games. While it fell just short in Saturday’s loss at Air Force, New Mexico was knocking. And running back Kasey Carrier was the one who knocked.

Carrier broke 300 yards rushing and scored three touchdowns in the loss. He jockeys with Louisiana Tech running back Kenneth Dixon for top honors this week. Dixon scored six touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ sound thrashing of Idaho.

Both broke into the top 10 vote getters for the season, while Northern Illinois quarterback Jordan Lynch moved into a tie for No. 2.

Kyle Kensing

1. Kenneth Dixon: Sonny Dykes’ offense isn’t all pass: Kenneth Dixon was called on for 232 yards rushing and six touchdowns.

2. Kasey Carrier: New Mexico lost and is 4-4, but Kasey Carrier probably deserves serious consideration for Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year honors. He cracked 338 yards his week, beating Air Force at its own option game in many facets.

3. Margus Hunt, SMU: The Ponies were intercepting Houston passes left-and-right on Thursday, and much of that can be attributed to the pressure coming off the line. Margus Hunt had an outstanding game, getting to the quarterback twice for sacks, and four times on hurries. He also broke up a pass.

4. Jordan Lynch, Northern Illinois: Jordan Lynch continues his impeccable replacement of 2011 Detmer Award contender Chandler Harnish, most recently throwing and rushing for two touchdowns in a rout of Akron.

5. Antoinne Jimmerson, North Texas: The speedy North Texas slot back caught just two passes in last Tuesday’s defeat of La.-Lafayette, but they were two crucial receptions. Each went for a touchdown, including the game-winner.
