Denard Robinson will appear on the cover of EA Sports NCAA Football 14.
Former Michigan Wolverines quarterback Denard Robinson will appear on the cover of EA Sports NCAA Football 14, the video game producer announced on its website. Robinson emerged from a pool of eight semifinalists, and defeated Texas A&M Aggies wide receiver Ryan Swope in the final vote.
“I want to say thank you to all the fans at Michigan for getting behind me. Michigan has one of the best fan bases,” Robinson said in EA Sports’ press release.
He joins Desmond Howard (NCAA 2006) and Charles Woodson (NCAA ’99) as the third Wolverine to appear on the franchise’s cover, but is the first Michigan product without a Heisman Trophy. Each of the last three NCAA Football cover choices were also Heisman winners: Tim Tebow (NCAA 11, 2007 Heisman); Mark Ingram (NCAA 12, 2009 Hesiman); and Robert Griffin III (NCAA 13, 2011 Heisman).
The last cover choice to not win a Heisman was Utah Utes quarterback Brian Johnson, who appeared on the NCAA 10 edition.
Robinson finished his Michigan career as the top rushing quarterback in NCAA history, totaling 4495 yards with 42 touchdowns. He passed for another 6250 yards and 49 scores.
Robinson was recruited to run Rich Rodriguez’s spread option offense, and did so effectively. But prior to his junior season, Michigan made a wholesale coaching staff change. Offensive coordinator Al Borges continued to use Robinson at quarterback in 2011, but played him primarily at running back late in the 2012 campaign.
Robinson worked out at wide receiver during January’s Senior Bowl, but still wants the opportunity to show NFL scouts his quarterbacking abilities with the draft a month away. He will throw at Michigan’s pro day on March 14.
