College Football Recruiting: Mississippi State Sends Michigan Recruit Michael Ferns An Interesting Card
By Kyle Kensing
College football recruiting is an ever-evolving science. Capturing the attention of teenagers with dozens of other influences trying to impact their decisions is not an easy task, so coaching staffs are trying unique approaches.
The personal touch is one method coaches employ. NC State’s new staff sent an impassioned plea of needing difference-makers to one recruit. But it’s not always the best. Courtesy of Hook ‘Em Headlines, this card Mississippi State recruiters sent to 2014 Michigan Wolverines verbal commit Michael Ferns is…interesting.
SB Nation speculates it’s a fraud — maybe a late April Fool’s joke.
Presumably, Mississippi State did not inundate Ferns with these cards a la in-state rival Ole Miss Rebels. Hugh Freeze’s staff sent prospect Clifton Garrett 54 handwritten letters.
Assuming this card is the real deal though, there’s so much more Mississippi State could have done. With Freeze dominating the recruiting trail, the Bulldogs need to counter with some unorthodox tactics.
Invoking “baller” isn’t a bad idea, just executed poorly in this case. Perhaps a signing telegram from Li’l Troy is in order?
