Ira Schoffel of The Tallahassee Democrat broke news via Twitter that Florida State Seminoles quarterback Clint Trickett is transferring from Florida State.
Florida State’s official athletic site, Seminoles.com, confirmed Trickett’s transfer. Per the official release, head coach Jimbo Fisher said:
"After a long meeting with Clint, he expressed he’d like to explore another playing opportunity, and I’ve signed off on his wish. Clint has not only been a great player for our program, but a great young man and ambassador for Florida State who will graduate in a few weeks."
Because Trickett will receive his degree, he is available for immediate participation upon his arrival to another program.
Trickett’s transfer comes just days after Jameis Winston impressed in the FSU spring game. Winston was earning considerable praise for his dual threat abilities, perhaps adding to the “forgotten man” status Nole Nation’s David M. Hale detailed for Trickett.
Trickett was the most experienced of those vying for the Seminoles’ starting job, vacated by fast-rising NFL draft prospect E.J. Manuel. Trickett 675 yards and seven touchdowns, filling in for an injured Manuel during the 2011 season. Last year, Trickett saw less action and completed 22-of-34 pass attempts for 272 yards.
“I’m going to play the best guy that I think gives us the best chance to win,” Fisher said to reporters earlier this week. “Whoever that may be, we’ll shake it out.”
Jacob Coker presumably gains ground in contention for the starting job, though Winston is likely the front runner.
