Oklahoma extended coach Bob Stoops’ contract through 2020 on Thursday. If completed, the contract would make Stoops the longest-tenured coach in school history.

“We took this action to express the University’s deep appreciation for Bob Stoops’ work,” OU president Dan Boren said in a statement. “In my opinion, he ranks among the very best nationally in the way he combines his ability as a coach with high ethical standards.”

Stoops, who reached 100 wins faster than any NCAA Division One coach in the modern era, is entering his 15th season with the Sooners. After Thursday’s extension, his current contract would take him up to 22 years, surpassing Bud Wilkinson (17 seasons) and Barry Switzer (16 seasons).

“I appreciate the University’s commitment to our program and me,” Stoops said in a statement. “Most coaches dream of working in the kind of situation that exists at Oklahoma, especially with leaders like President Boren and Joe Castiglione. We’re proud of what we have accomplished to this point and look forward to achieving a lot more.”
