Just four weeks before his Hawaii Warriors open the season against the USC Trojans, head coach Norm Chow that offensive coordinator Aaron Price has been fired.

Per Hawaii News Now, Chow’s statement was cryptic. “Some issues have arisen and we’ve chosen to move forward without Aaron,” he said.

Price’s departure leaves offensive play calling duties to Chow, Jordan Matthews and graduate assistant Jordan Wynn. Wynn’s unexpected promotion on the staff is interesting.

Just one year ago, he was in training camp as quarterback for the Utah Utes. Chow was Wynn’s offensive coordinator in an injury plagued 2011. His UU predecessor, Brian Johnson, is co-offensive coordinator of the Utes with Dennis Erickson.

Price was hired just six months. Last season, he was offensive coordinator under his dad, Mike Price, at UTEP.

As for Hawaii, the offensive growing pains that hindered the Warriors last year could again be an issue in Chow’s second season. He installed the Pro Set offense he has run at numerous stops, including in the NFL. The Warriors averaged just 21.2 points per game, ranking No. 100 in the Bowl Subdivision.

Hawaii had one of the most explosive offenses in college football under June Jones in the mid-2000s. Quarterbacks Timmy Chang and Colt Brennan set NCAA records in succession. Greg McMackin kept Jones’ system in place for his four seasons as head coach. The 2010 season was UH’s peak under McMackin, when the Warriors averaged just below 40 points per game.
