The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports running back Andrew Buie has left West Virginia. Head coach Dana Holgorsen announced the Mountaineers’ leading rusher in 2012 was redshirting this upcoming season.

Charles Sims’ transfer from Houston added an interesting dynamic to West Virginia’s running back situation. Buie rushed for a relatively quiet 851 yards in Holgorsen’s pass-happy attack. Sims played for Holgorsen in 2009, when the coach was offensive coordinator at UH. Holgorsen’s system made frequent use of Sims’ pass-catching ability out of the backfield.

Holgorsen told West Virginia Illustrated upon announcing Buie’s redshirt that the junior was not up to snuff “mentally and physically,” and would regroup this season in preparation for 2014.

There is no word yet on if Buie intends to transfer. He has two years of eligibility remaining. The 5-foot-9, 190-pound product of Jacksonville, Fla., leaves West Virginia with 1023 career rushing yards and eight touchdowns. Buie also has two memorable plays in his highlight reel.
